Another 5 home improvement mistakes:
6. In order to get a clearer picture of what and how will be done and what materials you will need, draw up a plan. Plans for small projects can be drawn by a contractor, however, large-scale projects should be entrusted to a designer or an architect. For instance, if you decide to alter walls, then your plans should be verified by a qualified engineer.
7. You should be careful while estimating costs, for sometimes, when hiring a contractor the initial price might seem a lot lower than it turns out later. You should also keep your eyes peeled while receiving allowance items from your contractor as at the beginning allowances are quite low and then grow up tremendously. What you should do, is to ask a line item for straight costs on materials and labor. This will contribute to a more clear and honest working atmosphere.
8. All payments and financing terms should be figured out before signing up the contract. It is you who should maintain control over the money allocated for the project, not your contractor or project manager. Often draws on construction accounts made by contractors are not used for the purposes intended. You can avoid this by paying money only when the materials are delivered and only after work is inspected and approved. Your initial payment should also be reasonable.

If you are bored and fed up with the way your interior objects are displayed, all you need to do is to turn them into something new, more lively and artistic, then they certainly will attract everybody’s attention. For example, you can add some freshness to your room by creating graphic accents, art prints, graffiti boards or swatch boards of textile, or just displaying artistic photographs.
Let us take photos, for instance. You can create a gorgeous photo gallery by displaying photographs of yourself, your mother or sister, no matter what color – black and white, sepia or multicolored. You can take pictures from your childhood or from some fashion or sports event that you attended. A good idea would be to create a swatch board and stick there all those pictures, or making wooden or textile frames around the photos. All you have to do is to give way to your imagination.
Another creative tip is to simply wallpaper one of the walls. It will animate the whole room and bring some really nice look. It does not matter whether you will wallpaper the whole room or just borders near the ceiling or just the centre of the wall. You can also add some interesting patterns or modern stickers with flowers, trees, leaves, people and it will certainly bring some refreshing touch to the whole room.
But if you want something contemporary and outstanding, then graffiti board is the thing you need. Fixing up a large white board on the one of your room’s walls, or behind a stairway, and painting graffiti on it will make your house stand out and it will certainly please the kids.

We tend to buy a lot of things, no matter whether we need them or not, whether we want them or not. And then these things accumulate in our closet through years, and we do not know what to do with all that stuff, piled up with no reason. But this article will provide you with some tips on how to make some room in your closet for all these things.
First, you should take everything out of your closet, just clean it out. Then you should inspect every item and decide whether you need it or not. You can do it by sorting out everything into three piles of things: a keep pile (a pile of things to keep), a garage sale pile (a pile of things to sell) and a get-rid pile (a pile of things to be thrown away). After having sold the items you do not need you will be able to buy things you really want.
Second, if you do not want to get rid of any of your things, think and try to create some room for them by building additional shelves. You can buy ready made shelves or can make them yourself. The most popular and inexpensive shelves are those made of cardboard or particle board. But if you want to make a shelf on your own, we advise you to purchase brackets and a shelf board made of particle board since it costs less money. Continue reading...

When painting, it is important to choose the right color. Choosing warm or cool shades often depends on one’s taste, on the season of the year, even on the amount of daylight a room to be painted receives. If we compare warm and cool colors, warm colors – red, brown, yellow and tan – resemble lights of the day and sunshine, are more affecting to our eyes, add comfort and a sense of hospitality to one’s room. Cool colors – blue, green, violet and gray – in their turn, are more comparable with cold, cloudy days or evenings, they act as relaxation or even apathy stimulants.
As far as white color is concerned, one should know that there are different shades and hues of it, for example, cream, off-white, beige and so on. Only through comparing fabrics and furniture of one’s own room, one will find the perfect match for the walls. On the other hand, if you want a more spacious room, making it more horizontal, painting the ceiling white and the rest of the room another color can also serve you well. Mixing up things, for example, painting three walls in the room one color and the fourth and the ceiling another, contributes to the joining of different themes in your rooms.

Any home improvement should start from flooring improvement in your basement. Building homes on a concrete slab is inexpensive, permanent and efficient, however, in most cases it looks gray and unattractive.
Here are some options of how to turn your basement from an unfinished ugly storage area into an appealing one.
First, instead of putting carpets on the concrete floor you can lay down tile or linoleum. Carpets or carpet pads can be ruined quickly by water, accumulating in basements because of drainage failures, or seeping from the soil. This can lead to the mold, allergies, and toxic gas emissions. Thus, you should consider decorating the floor with something that will not be destroyed by humidity and dampness.
If you want your basement to look more airy and spacious, you can try using tile patterns that run diagonally across the room. It will create an illusion of more space and the room will appear larger. Likewise, you can try and color your walls in light shades; it will make your basement look more open and bright. And do not forget about concrete cinder block walls if you want to improve the general look of your basement.

Before getting down to installing tile flooring you should be aware of 5 essential tips on how to do it. It will make your work a lot easier:
First, you should possess proper tools, otherwise your time, money and effort will be wasted in vain and the whole project will be put at risk. Do not try to remove tile with a screwdriver and a hammer, it will do you no good. On the contrary, do your best to check for tile cutters in the tool rentals, they always have the necessary tools and the money spent on rent will pay its way in the long term.
Second, the area to be tiled should be prepared in advance. Remember that floor tiling takes more time than just one weekend, so there should be no rush. It will take some time to level the floor, filling all the voids. Often a cement based leveling compound is used, it binds well to concrete and wood subflooring, however, in order to avoid any mistakes you should read the packaging first.
